<h2 id="1b5defc6-642d-4b3f-97f3-3225c9a70274" data-toc-id="1b5defc6-642d-4b3f-97f3-3225c9a70274">A fun-filled day of fundraising</h2>Last week, the SSG team came together to celebrate Red Nose Day 2026, raising money for Comic Relief through a day packed with creativity, cake and a lot of laughter.Red Nose Day is one of the UK’s biggest charity fundraising events, supporting people facing poverty and hardship both in the UK and around the world. It’s always a great opportunity to get involved, and this year was no exception.<div data-type="horizontalRule"><hr></div><h3 id="3014db32-18a8-44ea-8962-9f844c14f043" data-toc-id="3014db32-18a8-44ea-8962-9f844c14f043">Bake sale success</h3>Our office bake sale was a hit, with a brilliant mix of homemade treats and shop-bought favourites. From cakes and brownies to biscuits and snacks, there was something for everyone, and it’s safe to say the breakout area didn’t stay full for long!Most importantly, every donation helped support Comic Relief’s vital work, showing how simple workplace activities can make a meaningful difference.<div data-type="horizontalRule"><hr></div><h3 id="d750035d-6bbc-4ed1-aa76-903fd83553b5" data-toc-id="d750035d-6bbc-4ed1-aa76-903fd83553b5">Creativity on display</h3>One of the highlights of the day was our “Design Your Own Red Nose” competition.Team members got stuck in, creating some truly imaginative (and sometimes slightly outrageous!) designs. Great Tommy Sleep Out 2026: A night under the stars for a powerful cause

Just before the Christmas break, Adam Worth, Head of Learning at SSG, had the pleasure of visiting Canada Hill Primary School in Newton Abbot to donate a selection of anti-choking first aid devices, both fixed and portable. These vital tools will help make the school an even safer environment for every child who walks through its doors.The donation was inspired by the school’s fantastic School Council - a group of incredibly dedicated primary-aged pupils who worked hard to raise funds for these life-saving devices. SSG has had an exciting quarter, full of big announcements and meaningful community involvement! We kicked things off by announcing our acquisition of Seal Safety, expanding our expertise and strengthening our health, safety and electrical training services. Our team got stuck into giving back - July saw us take part in St Luke's Midnight Walk, a moving evening bringing people together in remembrance, hope&nbsp;and support for a cause that touches so many lives. This month we&nbsp;also hosted our own Macmillan Coffee Morning, baking and sharing delicious treats while raising funds to support an amazing cause.Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue our community engagement by attending Riviera Connect and raising money for Children in Need, events that promise more opportunities to connect, give back and make a difference!

Thursday 13 March proved to be a humbling and impactful day for many of our staff members at SSG, facing the struggles of homelessness head on with a visit to Shekinah and participation in the Great Tommy Sleep Out.When we became business friends with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="https://shekinah.co.uk/">Shekinah</a> at the end of 2024 we pledged to directly support Shekinah’s efforts to help people experiencing homelessness.On Thursday Chris, Denise and Kerry visited Shekinah’s Stonehouse Creek location to better understand the critical work they do. For over 30 years Shekinah have supported people experiencing homelessness to build positive lives and futures by helping them to find accommodation, assisting improved physical development opportunities and giving practical support to find employment.Upon arrival, we were welcomed by Kristy, Shekinah’s Events and Community Assistant, who provided us with a tour of their facilities. She gave us valuable insights into the services they provide, and we witnessed firsthand how Shekinah supports its community. We were shown the rough sleeper zone, the canteen, the creative room, the training spaces and the like-for-like doctors' facilities, which showed Shekinah’s all-rounded approach to supporting those in need.Our visit to Shekinah was a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness and the vital role Shekinah plays in offering support and hope. Seeing firsthand the breadth of services they provide reinforced our commitment to this partnership and to making a meaningful difference. At SSG, we are proud to stand alongside Shekinah in their mission to build brighter futures for those who need it mostLater that same day, in a powerful show of solidarity for veterans facing homelessness, four dedicated members of our team took part in the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="https://rbli.co.uk/rbli-events/the-great-tommy-sleep-out/">Great Tommy Sleep Ou</a>t. In support of the work of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/">Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI)</a>, they braved the cold and slept under the stars in the SSG car park. As temperatures dropped throughout the night, it served as a stark reminder of the harsh realities many homeless veterans face daily.The Great Tommy Sleep Out is a fundraising challenge designed to raise awareness and vital funds for the thousands of veterans currently experiencing homelessness across the UK. This marks our team’s fourth consecutive year participating, and each year we approach it with empathy and determination. Led by Miles the team, including Andy, Barry and Nobby, the team shares a strong sense of purpose to not only raise much-needed funds, but to highlight the increasing struggles veterans face in accessing social housing and securing employment."The most thought-provoking moment comes when settling down for the night. The cold, damp air, coupled with the constant sounds of owls hooting, passing trains, and bins being emptied at 4:05 AM, creates a challenging environment. Sleeping on rough ground made for an uncomfortable night with little rest for most.However, we had the privilege of getting up, having breakfast, and warming up indoors. For those experiencing homelessness, this is a relentless reality they face night after night.” said Miles, Senior Health and Safety Consultant/Trainer.We are proud to announce that this year, they raised an incredible £430.00! Every penny will go directly to supporting veterans in need, ensuring they don't have to face the hardships of homelessness alone.

From awareness to action: our mission to support the homeless

On Saturday 22 February 2025, members of our SSG team, alongside those from Surfers Against Sewage, took part in the Million Mile Clean in and around Plymouth’s Forder Valley.The Million Mile Clean, launched by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) in 2021, encourages volunteers to clean over 10 miles of UK landscapes each year. A key part of this initiative is ‘The Brand Audit’, where collected waste is analysed and reported back to SAS. This data feeds into SAS's Citizen Science project, helping identify the worst-polluting companies and supporting efforts to urge the government to take stronger action to protect our natural spaces.Donned in their hi-vis jackets with litter pickers (made from recycled fishing rods) and heavy-duty SAS Million Mile Clean bags; Andy, Annie and Hannah began their clean-up from Plymouth Snowsports Centre and worked their way to the Forder Valley Esso garage. Along the entire stretch of road, where the pavement met the nature reserve, they found litter embedded in the bushes, grass, and soil.“We found the things you’d expect, like food wrappers and empty drink cans or bottles, but also things like scrap metal, tyres, air fresheners… we even found someone’s bank card!” said one member of the team.By the end of their clean-up, they had collected five full bags of rubbish, including parts of a motorcycle too large to fit into a bag. The waste was later transferred to the council’s purple bags for collection from Poole Farm, with the total weight revealed to be over 50 kilograms – the equivalent of a small hot tub or a giant Pacific octopus.“I organised the walk because I’m passionate about a clean, healthy environment and am sick of seeing rubbish in beautiful natural areas, especially along riverbanks, beaches, and pathways,” said Andy Peters, Health and Safety Trainer and Advisor. “By using the council purple bags, we hope to raise awareness, as it is them who ultimately have to collect and dispose of the waste. We want to encourage them to provide suitable bins to enable people to dispose of their waste responsibly.”We look forward to taking part in more of these walks before the end of the year and continuing to make a positive impact on our local environment.

So far this year, SSG have proudly hosted and participated in numerous charitable events, raising a substantial sum for various causes.Find out more about what we’ve been getting up to!15 March - Red Nose DayThis year's theme, "Do something funny for money", inspired us to engage our team with a variety of fundraising games. Activities included cake decorating, a comedy quiz, and a playful red nose hunt in the office.21 March – The Great Tommy Sleep Out - Royal British LegionMembers of our team participated in The Great Tommy Sleep Out to raise awareness and funds for homeless veterans. The event involved spending a night sleeping outside in cold and uncomfortable conditions, mirroring the realities faced by many veterans on the streets. Our team showed their dedication and compassion while raising money and spreading awareness for this important cause.14 June – UEFA Euro 2024 – Cancer Research UK and Prostate CancerTo celebrate UEFA Euro 2024, we held a sweepstake for our team members. To enter, participants donated £2, with the funds going to the winner's chosen charity.As the tournament progressed the competition got hot with participants being knocked out left, right and centre; building a fantastic buzz around the office. Our lucky winners, who drew Spain, chose to donate the funds to Cancer Research UK.We also hosted a "Wear a Football Shirt to Work" day in support of Prostate Cancer's #Shirt2Work campaign. Team members were able to wear a football shirt of their choice, whilst donating £2 towards a fantastic cause.12 July - St Luke’s Midnight Walk - St Luke's HospiceAnother year meant another St Luke’s Midnight Walk for our dedicated SSG team. This time, 11 team members braved a rather wet night to take part in this meaningful event. Decked out in pink and glitter, our team proudly walked six miles across Plymouth, making it a memorable experience. They raised a whopping £270 for St Luke’s Hospice.As well as these events, we have had members of the team take part in their own charitable events. These include Race for Life 10k, Pretty Mudder 5k, and a charity ball for The Royal Engineers’ Association.We still have plenty of charitable events left to go including Macmillan Coffee Morning on the 27 September and a fun filled day of activities for Children in Need on the 13 November.

SSG raising money and spreading awareness for important causes

In a heartfelt display of solidarity and commitment to supporting veterans experiencing homelessness, four members of our team participated for the third consecutive year in The Great Tommy Sleep Out, organised in honour of the (RBLI).The Great Tommy Sleep Out, is a fundraising challenge that aims to raise awareness and essential funds in support of the estimated 6,000 veterans currently experiencing homelessness across the UK. Embracing the cause with empathy and determination, our team joined forces to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who have served their country.Led by Miles, the team including Andy, Barry and Nobby, embraced this challenge with a shared sense of purpose. Through their participation, they aimed not only to raise funds but also to shed light on the increasing struggles young veterans face when accessing social housing and securing employment.The Sleep Out took place on Thursday 21st March in the company’s car park. While wrapped in their sleeping bags, our members experienced a brief insight into homeless veterans’ realities."The Great Tommy Sleep Out was a reminder of the sacrifices made by our veterans and the urgent need to address the issue of homelessness within this community," said Miles.The rest of the team extends their gratitude to all supporters and participants who contributed to the success of the fundraising campaign, with an estimated £600 raised so far.
